लोमोव जो कि 35 वर्षीय लड़का है। एक दिन चूबुकोव के घर शादी का प्रस्ताव लेकर आते हैं। चूबुकोव उनकी बात सुनकर प्रसन्न होते हैं और नताल्या को बुलाते हैं। लोमोव और नताल्या के बीच बातचीत शुरू होती है, लेकिन जल्द ही वे ऑक्सेन मेडोज़ नामक ज़मीन के टुकड़े को लेकर झगड़ने लगते हैं। गुस्से में लोमोव घर छोड़कर चले जाते हैं।
जब चूबुकोव नताल्या को बताते हैं कि लोमोव उन्हें प्रपोज़ करने आए थे, तो नताल्या परेशान हो जाती हैं और उन्हें वापस बुलाने को कहती हैं। लोमोव वापस आते हैं, लेकिन इस बार वे अपने कुत्तों (Guess गेस और Squeezer स्क्वीजर) की श्रेष्ठता को लेकर बहस करने लगते हैं। बहस के दौरान लोमोव बेहोश हो जाते हैं। होश में आने के बाद भी झगड़ा चलता रहता है।
आखिरकार, चूबुकोव उन्हें शादी के लिए तैयार करवा देते हैं, लेकिन नाटक का अंत फिर से झगड़े के साथ होता है, जो यह दर्शाता है कि उनका वैवाहिक जीवन भी ऐसे ही विवादों से भरा रहेगा।

Summary
The Proposal
The play revolves around three characters:Lomov - A hypochondriac landowner seeking to marry his neighbor’s daughter.
Stepan Chubukov - A landowner and Natalya's father.
Natalya - Chubukov’s strong-willed daughter.
Lomov visits Chubukov to propose marriage to Natalya. Initially, Chubukov is delighted and calls Natalya, who appears unaware of Lomov’s intentions. However, their conversation soon spirals into an argument over a piece of land, the Oxen Meadows. After much heated debate, Lomov leaves in frustration.
When Chubukov reveals to Natalya that Lomov intended to propose, she becomes upset and insists that he be called back. Upon his return, another petty argument breaks out, this time about the superiority of their respective hunting dogs, Guess and Squeezer. Amid the chaos, Lomov suffers a fainting episode, but the argument resumes as soon as he recovers.
Eventually, Chubukov forces the couple to agree on the proposal. The play ends with more bickering, suggesting that their married life will be filled with similar trivial disputes.
